YOU KNOW THE OLD LINE ABOUT TEACHERS: “Those who can, do those who can’t, teach.” Forget it, especially when it comes to educators (and then some) Art and Susan Zuckerman of New Rochelle. Art, 52, CEO of three Westchester-based information technology companies and former teacher and basketball coach, and Susan, also 52, a social studies and English teacher at Yonkers’ Mark Twain Middle School, do – a lot.
In addition to their day jobs, the Zuckermans run a Manhattan walking tour company (Tawny Tours), volunteer as tour guides with Big Apple Greeters of New York City, and lecture at Westchester Community College about travel. Art also hosts a radio talk show, “Tech Watch,” for New Rochelle’s WVOX 1460 AM and is one of the founders and Chairman emeritus of a business networking group, The Westchester Information Technology Cluster.
And, recently, their scheduled got slightly busier. They’ve begun hosting a Monday night hour-long show, “Z” Travel and Leisure,” on WVOX, a program dedicated to their love of, well, doing. “There is too much happening to sit around your house and watch TV,” declares Art.
“We want our show to inspire people to activity,” Susan adds.
They even got their kids, Mark, 16, and Scott, 14, into the act: They help out with the radio program and the family’s latest venture – audio walking tours of New York City. “Our house is full of boards, burners, CDs and other audio equipment,” reports Art.
The Zuckerman household is also full of books – 8,000 books. “We like to know a little bit about everything,” says Susan.
The couple, who met while teaching at Emerson Middle School in Yonkers (“We shared a study hall,” says Susan), is “alike.” says Art, “We do everything at one speed – 150 m.p.h.” He adds, “I can’t live to age 150, but I’m going to do as much as if I’ve got 150 years.”
How do they find the time to sleep? “I wish I didn’t have to,” Art answers. “It’s a waste of time.” |
