Chinatown and the “Gangs of New York” & The Irish!
(Published Articles/Things You Always Wanted To Know, But Didn't)

ChinatownIn the epic blockbuster by Martin Scorsese, the 5 Points Area,  Chinatown & Foley Square sections of New York, were depicted as a formerly Irish ghetto, and even described as the worst area in the world by Charles Dickens (worse than Bombay, India) in his 1842 trip to America. The question I always ask when I see a supposed historically accurate movie is, “How true to life is this movie?”.

Smokey The Bear, Yellowstone, and New York City
(Published Articles/Things You Always Wanted To Know, But Didn't)

New York Federal HallNothing could seemingly be more opposite, but you may be surprised to know that some of our area’s most intriguing, little known and unique sites are part of our National Park Service.  Let’s stop right here, before you get the impression that we’ll be talking about greenery, beaches and park land.  We are absolutely not!  We’re talking about our city and our local area.  It’s highly unlikely that these are places for Ranger Bob and “Smokey the Bear” images.

(Published Articles/Things You Always Wanted To Know, But Didn't)

Food Glorious Food!“Consider yourself at home, consider yourself one of the family.”  The Broadway show Oliver has a lot in common with New York restaurants.  Let’s see, Fagin was the artful pickpocket and crook, Bill Sikes was a tyrant, and Oliver was the poor kid who pleaded for more. Well, New York City restaurants have a lot in common with these characters.  Many “Faginist” restaurants can be overpriced, and you feel as if you’ve had your pocket picked after dining.

But, contrary to popular belief, there are great restaurants and values within NYC.  Today we’ll discuss some of the unique and unusual restaurants, some well known and some almost unknown.

Rudolf Valentino's Funeral
(Published Articles/Things You Always Wanted To Know, But Didn't)

Even young people of today have heard that sexy young men are called “Valentino’s”.  Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Pierce Brosnan, a young Sean Connery (he just gets sexier with age), Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington, Antonio Banderas and all the other mega stars of today can’t hold a candle to “The Sheik” – Rudolf Valentino.  Terms like “The Sheik” and “A Valentino” have become synonymous with the machismo men of the “big screen”.

So, what does this have to do with traveling around New York?  Well…everything!   It seems that Rodolpho Alfonzo Rafaelo Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d’Antonguolla spent much of his life around New York City.  He even privileged New York that upon his death, from a burst appendix, by lying in state at St. Malachy’s church on 47th between Broadway and 8th Avenue.  Thousands of mourners lined up for blocks to pay tribute to the legend. St. Malachy’s is known as the Actor’s Chapel, which leads us to another adventure – that of exploring the often visited, but little known, area called Times Square and the Theater District.

Medical New York - Or "I Didn't Know That!"
(Published Articles/Things You Always Wanted To Know, But Didn't)

As New York historians, Susan and I were recently asked to speak at a medical conference in Gramercy Park, at the prominent National Arts Club, the former house of Samuel Tilden.  Remember him?  He was a presidential candidate, like Al Gore, who won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote and the election. This wonderful neighborhood is the home to the rich and famous, and has New York City’s only private park where key holders are only key holders are permitted inside.  By now you must realize, from our ongoing walking tour tips, that New York City has everything!  We started by taking little know facts about the personalities and people who shaped the history of “Gotham”.  Speaking of Gotham, did you know that Washington Irving of Sunnyside in Westchester, coined the phrase “Gotham” when describing this incredible city in his Knickerbocker Tales.  (Irving Place, in the Gramercy Park area is named for him.)
